Keeping Your Prosthetic Liner Clean: The Importance of Good Liner Hygiene

We take showers, brush our teeth, and wash our clothes regularly, so liner hygiene should also be a daily priority right?

What is the function of a Prosthetic Liner?

A Prosthetic Liner the interface between your residual limb and prosthesis that helps protect your skin and secure the prosthetic device. Since the liner is in direct contact with your skin, it is exposed to the sweat and dead skin cells that your body excretes. This makes it a hub for potential bacterial and fungal infections.

So How Do You Keep it Clean?

  • Wash the inside of the Liner daily: The best time to do it is at night before going to bed. This gives it plenty of time to dry. We suggest using a soft bristle brush and liner-safe cleanser solution.
  • Dry it Properly: Turn the liner right side out to let it dry. You do not want to let it sit with the inside exposed. This can cause cracking at the base, affecting the liner’s longevity, as well as an increased buildup of dirt and debris from the environment.
  • Deep clean your Liner: With your liner being a hotbed for bacteria and fungal by-product, it is important that you do what you can to protect your liner against damage and actively apply products that help prevent infection before they occur.
  • Wash Your Limb: Wash your limb before putting on your liner to ensure that it is clean. This is also a great time to inspect your residual with a mirror for any skin appearance changes or sores.

As a prosthesis user, you must maintain your residual limb and liner’s hygiene and cleanliness. By integrating healthy habits and routines for cleansing, you can reduce your chances of infections or further damage.

If you suspect you are getting an infection, do something! Act promptly before a small irritation becomes a severe problem. This advice also applies to wounds on the remaining limb or other areas of the body and don’t forget – The Liner Wand is a great aid to hygiene, we’d love to answer any of your questions – info@thelinerwand.com

We are a dedicated team of multidisciplinary professionals that are passionate about bringing innovative healthcare solutions to the amputee community. We created The Liner Wand with Apocrine technology to address the problems that can arise between the skin-liner interface.

The hallmark symptom of all these issues is skin irritation often accompanied by a very strong, offensive odor caused by bacterial byproducts. In fact, the skin irritation and odor can be so strong many amputees alter their lifestyles to compensate for this problem. They become reluctant to engage in social or work interactions and sometimes can not wear their prosthetic for days or weeks. This behavior can have profound personal, economic, and social implications. The Liner Wand Liner car kit is designed to provide an easy-to-use, safe, effective, and long-lasting solution to this challenge. Our flagship product, The Liner Wand w/Apocrine™ is designed to last two weeks. It is a patented and proprietary liquid supplied in an easy to use applicator that the amputee can use at home.

We believe that The Liner Wand is going to drive profound improvements in the lives of lower leg amputees.
